Quote Compendium: Clockwork Angel

Clockwork Angel Quote Compendium

Here is a bunch of all quotes I found or enjoyed in Cassandra Clare's novel, Clockwork Angel. Attention All Spoilerphobes: Some quotes may contain spoilers.

Small Note: I have the Walker Books paperback edition with 482 pages; pages may differ between copies but all chapters are the same.

When you find a man you wish to marry, Tessa, remember this: You will know what kind of man he is not by the things he says, but by the things he does.
- Aunt Harriet, Chapter 3, Page 39

She shuddered. "Oh, no. I hate chocolate."
Will looked horrified. "What kind of monster could possibly hate chocolate?"
- Tessa Gray, Will Herondale, Chapter 4, Page 89

"One must always be careful of books," said Tessa, "and what's inside of them, for words have the power to change us."
- Tessa Gray, Chapter 4, Page 93

"Only the very weak-minded refuse to be influenced by literature and poetry," said Tessa, determined not to let him run wildly off with the conversation.
- Tessa Gray, Chapter 4, Page 93

"Pulvis et umbra sumus. It's a line from Horace. 'We are dust and shadows.'
- Will Herondale, Chapter 4, Page 96

"You think she's pretty?" Will was surprised; Jem rarely opined on this sort of thing.
"Yes, and you do too."
- Will Herondale, Jem Carstairs, Chapter 11, Page 277

"Whatever you are physically," he said, "male or female, strong or weak, ill or healthy - all those things matter less than what your heart contains. If you have the soul of a warrior, you are a warrior. Whatever the colour, the shape, the design of the shade that conceals it, the flame inside the lamp remains the same. You are the flame." He smiled then, seeming to have come back to himself, slightly embarrassed. "That's what I believe."
- Jem Carstairs, Chapter 12, Page 289

Jem gave her a wistful look. "Must you go? I was rather hoping you'd stay and be a ministering angel, but if you must go, you must."
"I'll stay," Will said a bit crossly, and threw himself down in the armchair Tessa had just vacated. "I can minister angelically."
"None too convincingly. And you're not as pretty to look at as Tessa is," Jem said, closing his eyes as he leaned back against the pillow.
"How rude. Many who have gazed upon my have compared the experience to gazing at the radiance of the sun."
Jem still had his eyes closed. "If they mean it gives you a headache, they aren't wrong."
- Jem Carstairs, Will Herondale, Chapter 15, Page 348-349

"Mizpah," he said.
She blinked at him, a little dazed, "What?"
"A sort of good-bye without saying good-bye," he said. "It is reference to a passage in the Bible. 'And Mizpah, for he said, the Lord watch between me and thee when we are absent from one another.'
- Jem Carstairs, Chapter 17, Page 397

It is a great thing to love as it is to be loved. Love is not something that can be wasted.
- Jem Carstairs, Chapter 20, Page 476
